Charism/Apostolate
The Charism of the Sister Servants can best be summed as: "To teach spiritual things spiritually" under the patronage of Sr. Francis and St. Dominic and in a spirit of Truth and Charity. Our apostolate is the evangelization of Catholics through catechesis (teaching the Faith) and retreats. We offer retreats at Casa Maria Convent and Retreat House and we also teach the Faith in parishes, give talks and presentations and teach religion in a local Catholic school.
History
The Sister Servants were founded by Mother Mary Gabriel in 1987 in Birmingham, Alabama.
Prayer Life
The Sisters gather for a Holy Hour first thing in the morning, followed by Office of Readings and Morning Prayer. They also come together for Daytime Prayer, Vespers and Compline throughout the day. Holy Mass is the summit and focal point of the community's prayer. The sisters have a strong Marian devotion which is expressed in the community's custom of praying the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary each day in common.
Traditions
The Sister Servants are blessed to be able to blend both Dominican traditions and customs with Franciscan devotions. They pull heavily from St. Francis' love of the humanity of Christ and his spirituality of self-emptying in imitation of Our Lord. The sisters pray the Office in the Dominican tradition and are dedicated to learning the Faith intellectually and spiritually in order to share it with others.
